She was raised in Canton where she graduated from Canton High School in 1938. She graduated from Augusatana College in 1942 with a B.A. degree in English.
She taught school in Rapid City, South Dakota where she met her husband Hjalmar. They were married on December 30, 1945 in Canton, South Dakota.
Edna May is survived by her husband, Hjalmar, brother Rev. Donald P. Bankson of Fallbrook, CA, her three children, Vic (Gayle) Hellberg, David (Dorothy) Hellberg and Renee (Barry) Sedlacek all of Marshalltown, her six grandchildren, Nicole Hellberg, Erika (Hellberg) Lindblom, Matthew Hellberg, Kelli Hellberg, Amy Sedlacek-Harmon, Amanda Sedlacek, three nephews and one niece.
Edna May was preceded in death by her parents.
