Hugh had four sisters and three brothers. Mamie Allene who climbed out a window and eloped at 15. She moved to Texas, Lillian who died at 11 jumping rope, Gladys Mae and Fannie Lucine who died at birth. Her mother, Fannie died 5 days later. His brother Ogden Elliott who was two years younger, Eddie who lived 5 days and Max Kent. Max died at 8 years and Hugh and Ogden never got over his death. They were there when it happened. While riding through water, Max was standing up and fell out and was run over. He was riding in an open touring car.

Hugh served two tours with the US Marines. The first tour, he was very young. He was at Parris Island, San Diego, CA, Mares Island, CA, Guam.

He joined in WWII but was medically discharged because of severe asthma. He worked in a defense plant in Macon, GA until the end of the war. He then returned to Hazlehurst and worked with his brothers in Wilson Hardware. After a few years in Alma, GA in Wilson Hardware with Ogden, he came back to Hazlehurst. He eventually opened a restaurant named "The Dinner Bell Café and died in April of 1953.
