Robert was one of seven sons born to Benjamin Franklin and Marian Alice "Minnie" Smith Burlingame. His brothers were Benjamin Jr, Oliver, Charles, Mark, George,and James "Phillip".
On April 19,1911 he married Belle M Riedel in Clinton,Iowa. She died in 1934. They had a son, Ernest Riedel and a daughter, Marian Belle.
Robert worked as a carman/inspector for the C&NW railroad. He made his home for many years with his son and daughter-in law, Ernest and Dorothy Burlingame in Clinton, Iowa.
