Local cigar maker. A native of Baden, Germany, he was the son of Carl & Hannah (Lane) Baader. August came to Michigan in 1872, first settling in Manchester. August quit school at age 13 and went to work for the M. G. Lonecker cigar-making firm in Jackson for 18 years. He came to Albion in 1894 and started his own cigar factory in the rear of his home at 107 W. Walnut St. During this period, August served on the Albion City Council in 1898 and 1899. He also was in the saloon business here. August went into partnership with August Wochholz at 114 E. Erie St. in 1901 for 3½ years and the firm was known as Wochholz & Baader. Folowing this he went into business for himself again and operated his cigar making firm until his death, employing up to 15 persons at his 105 E. Walnut St. location, with retail at 309 S. Superior St. August is buried here next to his wife Henrietta Beilfuss whome he married September 8, 1886. Daughters buried in Riverside: Minnie Fischer, May Pahl, Della Fischer.
