He was a native and lifetime resident of Lumpkin County. He was the son of the late Benjamin Hill Higgins and Milda Johnson Higgins. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Higgins Freeland; sisters, Nell Woody, Alla Lee Freeland, Osta Perdue and Maudell Brackett; and brothers, Ben H. Higgins Jr. and Fred Higgins.
He had served as pastor of Bethel Tabernacle Baptist Church, Freedom Baptist Church and Mt. Zion Baptist Church No. 1 in Lumpkin County. He served as justice of the peace for 17 years and as the first magistrate judge of Lumpkin County for 23 years. He served as Worshipful Master and secretary of the Blue Mountain Masonic Lodge No. 38 F&AM of Dahlonega for 22 years. He was a member of Siloam Baptist Church, Lumpkin County.
Survivors include his wife, Lorene Nix Higgins, Dahlonega; daughters, Deborah Gaddis, Jasper, and Vanessa Higgins, Dahlonega; four granddaughters; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18, 2006, at Siloam Baptist Church, Lumpkin County. The Rev. J.R. Fields will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites.
