Mabel Eugenia Berry Smith , age 93, resident of Hamilton, Ga. died February 2, 2011 at Columbus Hospice House. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd., Columbus with Rev. Roy White and Rev. Rick Davison officiating. Mabel was born is Muscogee County on Oct 28, 1917. She was the daughter of the late Nettie Beatrice Anderson Berry and William Oscar Berry.
Mabel retired from Jordan High in Columbus in 1979. She began teaching school at age 18. She taught at Mountain Hill in Harris County, Central High in Phenix City, and Rosemount Elementary, Columbus Jr. High, and Arnold Jr. High in Columbus. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, the Georgia Retired Teachers, and Muscogee Retired Teachers Association.
She was an avid golfer and a member of several Ladies Golf Associations in Georgia She was a member of Edgewood Methodist Church for over 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Thomas D. Smith and seven siblings and their spouses, Horace (Abigail) Berry, Mary Evelyn Berry, Carlton (Dorothy) Berry, Roy (Eloise) Berry, Norma Berry (Warren) Relph, Dorothy Berry (Roger) Dunn, and Robert Berry. She is survived by her daughter Delores Smith (Glenn) Robinson, grandson Phillip L. (Deanna) Robinson, great-grandson Knox Robinson, her sister-in-law Dorothy Ann Berry and many nieces and nephews.
