Joel is the son of Joel Green and Philomela Clark

Born in Massachusetts, spent a time in New York and then settled in Sylvania, Lucas, Ohio. He followed in his father's footsteps and became a doctor. In the 1850 census, he is married to Catherine S, b. 1825 New York, possibly last name Kirby. She died in 1853.

Joel then married Eveline Bancroft. 4 children are found with this marriage - Kate S, William C, Mary Anna and Mattie M. Sometime in the 1870's this family moved to Kansas.
