Son of William Carpenter (~1805, Virginia - aft 1860 Jefferson County, IL) and first wife Rebecca P Bland (~1802, Virginia - 1844 Wilson County, TN). His parents married at Mecklenburg County, VA 21 Jan 1817 and by the early 1820s had moved to Wilson County, TN. Several of Robert's older siblings stayed in Wilson County, but following the death of Robert's mother, his father, Robert and a number of younger siblings moved to Jefferson County, IL by 1850.
Robert was married three times. He married Lydia Gray on 25 Mar 1860 in Marion County, IL. She died in 1878 and on 22 Mar 1879, in Jefferson County, IL he married his second wife, Nancy Leonard. Nancy apparently died after the 1880 census since in 1884, Robert married his third wife, Mary M Roth (probably her married name). Robert does not appear to have survived to the 1900 census.
