William E. Baird, 409 Spruce avenue, died at his home at 5:20 o'clock yesterday morning after having been ill for the past year. He was born in Altoona, Aug. 2, 1875, a son of Jacob and Louise (Coltabuagh) Baird, and was married Sept. 10, 1895, to Mary E. Rife, Hollidaysburg.
Mrs. Baird received his early education in the public schools of this city and entered the service of the Pennsylvania Railroad company in 1889 as an apprentice in the tin shop where he was employed for more than 40 years.
He was a charter member of Fourth Street Church of God, filling the office of life elder at the time of death. He was also active in Sunday school work, holding various offices.
Mr. Baird was a member of the Jr. O.U.A.M., No 472, Mt. City lodge of Odd Fellows, Harmon council, No. 57, D. of A. and the tin shop floral association.
Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Elsie, at home, and Grace, wife of Charles W. Clugh; one brother, Roy Baird, this city, and five grandchildren. Leona, Virginia and Thomas Carter, at home; Leroy Carter, located in the Panama Canal zone, and Marilyn Louise Clugh.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at Fourth Street Church of God at 2:30 o'clock in charge of the Rev. W.H. Snyder, pastor. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery. The body may be viewed at the home after noon today.
