In 1860 William Alexander , commonly known as Alex, was five years old, and lived with his parents and siblings, Eliza and John, in Burke County (P.O. Morganton).
Alex' father who fought in the Civil War was wounded and killed in 1863, when Alex was only about eight years old.

Alex married Sally Abee around 1874.

By 1880 they had four children: Eliza J. , Max, Alice, and John J., who was only one month old when this census was taken.
They all lived in Icard, Burke Co. Alex is registered as being a farmer.

The 1900 Census indicates that Alex is literate, married, and has been married for 26 years. Alex now 45 years old, and without an occupation, lives in his son Max's household, together with his daughter-in-law, and his grandson, in Lovelady, Burke. Alex's wife Sally does not appear on this census.

Twenty years later Alex still appears in his son Max's household in Lovelady. Alex is now aged 63 (according to census). Except for Alex, his son Max, and his daughter - in - law, there are now four grandchildren. Again, Alex' wife Sally is not recorded on this census.

*** Burial place for Alex is given on death certificate as 'Connelly Springs'. It is not clear however, which cemetery he is buried in. Most likely it is the above mentioned cemetery, as his mother, and one of his children are buried there. However, one of his sons, Julius Max Lail, is buried in Smarts Grove Baptist Cemetery, Connelly Springs.
