According to Tim Adriance, Daniel J. is found with both surnames of Auryansen and Adriance in records, as does his brother, John J. Daniel and John's other brothers, Stephen, Abraham J. and Henry held onto the Auryansen surname. When John J. left the confines of the exclusively Jersey Dutch neighborhood, the name Auryansen was just too "hick from the sticks" sounding. The earliest members of the family that anyone could remember had the patronymic Adrianse. So it made sense to adopt that name. Also, taken into consideration at that time was the fact that one of the largest names in manufacturing was the Adriance-Platt reaper company of Poughkeepsie, New York. These Adriances were of no relation. They were a different Adriance family that were actually Reyersons. However, the name Adriance opened doors with people who thought they might be part of the upper crust elite.

According to Tim Adriance, Daniel J. Auryansen/Adriance first married Catherine Zabriskie on November 7, 1840.
