Mire—A Mass of Christian Burial for Phillip Melancon, 87, will be celebrated on Monday, May 7, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. in Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Mire. Monsignor Russell Harrington will serve as celebrant. Entombment will follow in Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Mausoleum.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 6, 2012 from 8:00 A.M. until 10:00 P.M. in Duhon Funeral Home of Rayne, with a rosary being recited at 6:00 P.M. Visitation will continue on Monday from 8:00 A.M. until 9:30 A.M., with American Legion memorial rites being conducted at 8:45 A.M. in the funeral home.
Mr. Melancon passed away on Friday, May 4, 2012 in his Mire residence.
A native and lifelong resident of Acadia Parish, Mr. Melancon was a member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. He was a part of America's greatest generation, having served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Melancon was a member of American Legion Post #77 in Rayne.
After returning from the war, Mr. Melancon worked as a farmer and as a carpenter. He was a member of the carpenters' union local out of Lafayette.
Mr. Melancon enjoyed raising cattle, eating crawfish, and spending time with his family. He was an inspiration to all who knew him, and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his daughters, Vernola "LaLa" Castille and husband, Ronald of Church Point, Elaine Courville of Mire, Virginia Breaux of Mire, and Genevieve Creduer and fiancé, Gerald Credeur of Carencro; sons, Howard McBride and wife, Jeanette of Church Point, Melvin Melancon of Mire, and Phillip Melancon, Jr. of Mire; 21 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Proceeding Mr. Melancon in death were his wife, Lillian Mary Patin Melancon; parents, Onezime and Emelie Thibodeaux Melancon; sisters, Odelise Thibodeaux, Odit Thibodeaux, and Edese Bearb; brothers, Charles Melancon, Dumas Melancon, Clopha Melancon, Moise Melancon, Onezime Melancon, Jr., and Henry Melancon; grandson, Lee Jean Creduer; great-granddaughter, Rebecca Kate Faul; and son-in-law, Loyton Courville.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Duhon Funeral Home, L.L.C. of Rayne.
