Sam Lawton Tarpley, age 89 of Cornersville, died Saturday evening, April 17, in NHC (Merihil) Healthcare.
Mr. Tarpley was born October 1, 1914, son of the late Hoyt and Elsie Tarpley. He was born and raised in Wilson County, near Watertown, where he graduated from Watertown High School in June of 1931. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in June 1936.
Mr. Tarpley started his teaching career in Vocational Agriculture at Cornersville High School where he retired in 1973 for one year, only, to resume teaching for four more years before retiring after forty years in the same school. During these years he, also, coached football for seven years.
Mr. Tarpley distinguished himself as a FFA Advisor with his chapter becoming state winners in soil judging, public speaking and parliamentary contests. He was an honorary American Farmer.
He was very active in his community and church. Serving as Mayor of Cornersville for six years, served at Cornersville First Baptist Church as a Deacon and Adult Men's Sunday School teacher for over sixty years.
Mr. Tarpley married Ina Rebecca Phillips on January 27, 1937. They have two sons, Jimmy (Helen) Tarpley of Cornersville, and Philip Tarpley of Manchester. In addition to Mrs. Tarpley, Jimmy and Philip, he is, also, survived by one brother, Reverend Fred Tarpley of Madison, Mississippi.
Funeral services were conducted by Reverend Frank Edwards and Reverend Perry McCall Tuesday, April 20, at 11 a.m. from the Cornersville First Baptist Church with graveside services to follow at 2 p.m. in Fairview Cemetery at Norene, Tennessee, near Watertown.
The family was at Cornersville Funeral Home on Monday from 5 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. for visitation. The body laid in state at Cornersville First Baptist Church Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tennessee Baptist Children Home, 1310 Franklin Road, Brentwood, Tennessee 37027.
Pallbearers were Terry Jackson, Larry Moorehead, Foster Caneer, Rick Skillington, Grady Osborne, and Buddy London.
Honorary pallbearers were the Deacons of Cornersville First Baptist Church and the Adult Men's Sunday School Class of Cornersville First Baptist Church.
