nyshistoricnewspapers.org SULLIVAN COUNTY RECORD Feb 5 1948 page 1 - Mrs Elizabeth Menges Hick, widow of Henry Hick, died at the home of her son Leo between Youngsville and Livingston Manor on Monday Feb 2 following a couple weeks heart illness. She was in her 85th year.
Body removed to the Brand funeral home in Jeffersonville where a Rosary service was held Wednesday evening. Mass wheld at St. Francis church in Youngsville and burial in the family plot in Calvary Cemetery, Youngsville.
Dau of John Menges and MArgaret Staiss. When 2 years old she with her brother Jacob, 5 years older, came to America with there parents headed for the town of Callicoon, where the father's elder brother Peter Menges had preceded them by some years. The trip across the ocean took 72 days and the ship ran out of food. On the Erie train to Callicoon Depot they met Fred Hessinger of Callicoon Center who directed them to the home of Peter Menges. who then lived on a farm on the crossroad from the Lagerman place to the Youngsville Callicoon Center road. From there John Menges took his family to Debruce, where he worked in the tannery for a few years and then bought a farm between Youngsville and Livingston Manor which he sold to Jacob Ernst and then bought the neighboring farm of John Buchman who moved to Ohio. This became the Menges homestead
In 1884 she married at St Mary's church, Obernburg to Henry Hick whose parents lived in a house in the Delaware section of Jeffersonville later replaced by a Kohler built house which is now the residence of Principal E L Baker and family. In 1891 Mr Hick bought the Menges homestead of his father in law and moved there, while Mr Menges bought and moved to the Schlager farm nearer Youngsville. After Mr. Hick's death in 1925 son Leo took over the farm, and his mother continued to live there until her death this week. 12 children born to them, 9 are living - Miss Rose of NY; Charles S of Jeffersonville; Peter of Livingston Manor, Miss Margaret, a nun in St VIncent's Retreat, Harrison, NY; Fred, a retired city policeman of Callicoon; Leo on the homestead, Edward on the NY police force, Miss Alfreda of Harrison, NY; and Frances, wife of George Scchaller of New York. Also 2 sisters Mrs Margaret Yager, widow of John Yager Jr of Jeffersonville and Mrs Eliza Breutsch, widow of John Bruetsch of Union-Endicott, NY.. 18 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren
