Adam is the son of George Nigh (1777 - 1854) and Susannah Knode (1785 - 1868). Adam's father was born in Hagerstown, Maryland. He married Susannah in Hagerstown and their first born child Samuel was born there as well. The family eventually moved to Fairfield County, Ohio and it is very likely where Adam was born. Adam has four known siblings: Samuel (1804 - unk), Mary Amelia (1805 - unk), Sarah (1824 - unk) and Silas (1825 - unk).

Adam married Mary Jane Cook on November 29, 1833 in Pike County, Ohio where they raised their children. The family moved to Mercer County, Missouri in 1858. Most of the family family resided in either Mercer County or Grundy County, Missouri thereafter.

Adam served as Justice of the Peace in Mercer Co., MO from 1863-1866. He served in the Civil War for the Union enlisting in 1861 at Modena, MO and was in Co. F of the Mercer Co. Battalion Six Months Militia. He was a 2nd Lieutenant and then a Major. In 1862 he enrolled in Co. F of the 44th Regiment of the Enrolled Missouri Militia and was a Captain. In 1863 he was in Co. H of the 4th Provisional Regiment in the Enrolled Missouri Militia and was a Captain.
