James A. "Pappy" Baker

James A. "Pappy" Baker, 84, of Lowell, IN, passed away on Friday, June 22, 2001. Born April 9, 1917 in Fuller Island, Lowell, IN, to George Washington and Pearl (nee Burton) Baker, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary (nee Hickman) Baker, children: Nancy J. (Norbert) Piepho of Dyer, IN and Dennis J. (Cheryl) Baker of Glendale, AZ; three grandchildren: Michael D. (Marsha) Piepho of Dyer, IN, Michelle Y. (George) Kontol of DeMotte, IN and Melissa L. (Donny) Sims of Lowell, IN; five great-grandchildren: Nicole and Maranda Sims, Courtney Kontol, Jake and Allison Piepho; three sisters: Ruby (Joseph) Lukascek, Dorothy Kowalski and Barbara Glynn, all of AZ; two brothers, Joseph (Nellie) Baker of Griffith IN and William (Etta) Baker of AZ; several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by one son, Jimmie D., four sisters, Dorothy Jean Baker, Luana Wulitich, Beulah Gourley and Mary Taylor.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 26, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Sheets Funeral Home, 604 E. Commercial Ave., Lowell, IN, 46356, with Pastor Charles Hochmuth officiating. Burial will follow at Lowell Memorial Park, Lowell, IN. Friends are invited to call on Monday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

James was a lifelong resident of the Lowell Community who served the public in many ways, some of which were: announcer for Lowell High School football games for 3 years; Vice-President for the Lowell Jaycees, Cub Scouts Board of Review, ran for Town Board twice, volunteer for Buckley Homestead, Three Creeks Historical Assoc. Board of Governers for 3 years and Chairman for the Brothers of the Brush for the Centennial. He was retired from Tri Creek Lumber Co., Lowell, member of Lowell Church of Christ, Lowell Volunteer Fire Dept. for over 24 years continuing to help after his retirement whenever possible, and was presented with the "Outstanding Citizen Award" by the Lowell Grange in 1986.
