A native of Belton, Ga., she was a longtime resident of Gainesville and was a graduate of Florida State College for Women. She retired as a home economics teacher. She was active in the United Methodist Church, the Gainesville Garden Club, the American Association of University Women, the Creative Writing Club and the Parliamentary Law Club. She also belonged to the Gainesville Woman's Club, where she served as president in 1985, and the Wesley United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Dr. Mary Stearns Broske of Jacksonville and Julie Stearns Mara of Palatka; a son, George L. Stearns Jr. of Gainesville; a sister, Mary B. Howze of Gainesville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Williams-Thomas Funeral Home in Gainesville, with Dr. Eugene Zimmerman officiating.
