Octavia Lay Seals Octavia (Lay) Seals was born on March 5, 1917 in Black Springs, AR. to Nannie and JM Lay. She joined her Lord and Savior in Heaven on November 12, 2016. She was a lady of strong faith and integrity. She loved her Lord and family. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Broken Arrow, OK. Previously, Octavia and Glen Seals were long time members of Calvary Baptist Church in Broken Arrow, where she served as the church organist and pianist. As a youth, she bartered a pound of fresh butter (worth 75 cents) for piano lessons. She continued her music studies and graduated from Centenary College in Shreveport, LA. Her first teaching assignments were in Wilton, AR., and Ashdown, AR. The first Oklahoma teaching assignment for Glen and Octavia Seals was in Mason, OK., living in the on-site duplex provided by the school. They taught the school students on school days and also taught them in Sunday school on the weekends. She continued her career as a music teacher for the Broken Arrow Public Schools until her retirement in 1979, having taught for a total of over 30 years. In addition to her many years of teaching in the public schools, she taught private piano lessons to hundreds of students. Her watchful family included; Wayne and Wendy Wheelis of Midland, TX., J. D. and Kaye Wheelis of Round Rock, TX., Steve and Sheila Henderson of Jenks, OK., and Kenneth and Emily Burton of Springdale, AR., nieces and nephews include; Michael Wheelis, Elizabeth Wheelis, Katie Forsythe, Tori Wheelis, Scott Henderson, Sarah Henderson-Lee and Lucas Henderson. She is also survived by her son; Gary Seals and wife Debbie of Lake Mary, FL., and one grandson; Josh Seals, of New York City. She was pre-deceased by her husband; Jesse Glen Seals, her parents; Nannie and J. M. Lay, her sister; Elizabeth Ann Wheelis, and her niece; Kay Wheelis Henderson. The family is very thankful to the staff at Broken Arrow Nursing Home, Seasons Hospice and her friend, Kelly Evans, for their attention, care and prayers. Pallbearers are Steve Henderson, Scott Henderson, J. D. Wheelis, Wayne Wheelis, and Michael Wheelis. Honorary pallbearer is Lucas Henderson. The funeral service for Octavia Seals was held at the Kennedy-Kennard funeral home chapel in Broken Arrow on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to the Missions Fund at First Baptist Church-Broken Arrow.
