Charles L. Elder, 78, Dies at Wamego Home

Charles Layton Elder, 78, died Sunday at his home at Wamego. He was a retired farmer.

He was born March 8, 1890 at Cloverport, Ky. He lived at Havensville from 1925 to 1935 when he moved to Wamego. He was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church.

Mr. Elder was married in 1911 to Viola Mae Basham who died in 1922. In 1924 he was married to Eva Gibson.

Besides his wife, survivors include three sons, Damien Elder of Havensville, and Charles Elder and Thomas Elder, both of Wamego; eight daughters, Mrs. Leona Dulac and Mrs. Evelyn Winters, both of Onaga, Mrs. Alma Lee Fechter, Wamego, Mrs. Betty Willard, Manhattan, Mrs. Verna Roberts, Chanute, Mrs. Martina Trudo, Emporia, Mrs. Charlene Nelson, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mrs. Janice Jepson, Sioux City, Iowa; a step-son, Walter Lamastus, Tell City, Ind.; a brother, Waverly Elder, Stephensport, Ky.; a sister, Mrs. Eva Mae Powers, Cloverport, Ky.; 51 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Godfrey Elder, in 1966.

Requiem mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard's. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Catholic Church at Wamego Cemetery. Rosary was recited at 8 p.m., Tuesday at Stewart Funeral Home.

Charles Layton Elder, 78, died Sunday at his home at Wamego. He was a retired farmer.
