Vernon Orlin Cruse, age 92, passed away on April 29, 2012. He was born September 13, 1919 in Gold Hill, NC to Henry Dodson Cruse and Sarah Jane Haltom Cruse. He grew up on a small farm, the youngest of five brothers and one sister. He met his future wife, Pauline, while attending Mt. Pleasant High School where he later graduated. They were married by Vernon's cousin, Rev. D. R. Saunders, in front of a beautiful Christmas tree in the Reverend's home in December 1940.

Vernon and Polly worked in a hosiery mill in Concord, NC which closed when WWII broke out and Vernon got a job at a ship yard in Wilmington, NC, where their son Larry was born in 1942. Later Vernon joined the Navy and Polly moved back to Concord. Vernon served on a small ship in the Pacific which was preparing to lead larger ships in the invasion of Japan when the war ended, making the invasion unnecessary. After the war Vernon worked for a heating company in Concord where their daughter Nancy was born in 1947. They were charter members of Parkwood Baptist Church and active in various churches throughout their lives. Vernon owned a heating business in Concord in the fifties and later was a manager of a large mechanical contractor, where Polly was the bookkeeper. In the late sixties they moved to Orlando where he was manager of a company that worked on the original Disney World. During the seventies Vernon and Larry owned a Western Auto store in Sebring, FL. In 1992 they moved to Ocala, where they loved to meet their friends for breakfast at their favorite restaurant, Richard's Place.

Vernon touched the lives of many people, and though a disease left him paralyzed since 1985, he kept a great sense of humor and a positive attitude. His greatest pleasure came from time spent with his family.

He is survived by his sister Lonnie Holmes, Salisbury, NC, two children: Larry O. Cruse (Mavis) of Orlando, Florida and Nancy Surles (Charles) of Ocala, Florida; three grandchildren: Larry D. Cruse of Orlando, Florida, Kelly Hambelton (Christopher) of Ocala, Florida and Karen Bhaggan (Neil) of Frederick, Maryland; plus three great-grandchildren: Natalie and Angelynn Hambelton of Ocala, Florida and Valerie Bhaggan of Frederick, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Pauline.

Interment will be in the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. Those wishing to give memorials may do so to Hospice of Marion County or any other charity of their choice.
