Eugene (Gene) was the youngest child of James Dayton and Mary Theresa Eblen Amdor and was born October 14, 1922. He attended country school No. 3 and then Massena High School. He was a member of the "Six Man Football Team" that were State Champions in 1938. He was also a 4-H member and showed the Grand Champion Baby Beef at the 1938 County Fair.
On February 22, 1944, Gene married Marian D. Anstey, daughter of William C. and Ada Anstey, at St. Timothy's Catholic Church at Reno, Iowa. They are the parents of seven children.
William married Mary Marnin, and they had three children: Susan, Joseph, and Mark. James married Deirdre Malone, and they had four children: Myndi, Kelli, Nicholas, and Anthony. Elaine married Bill C. Hansen, and they had three children: Michele, Chad, and Jessica. Rita married Phillip A. Swanson, and they had two children: Meggan and Amy. Sheila did not marry. Thomas married Shari Powell and they had two children: Jamie and Matthew.
