According to emigration files and church records of Celle, Germany, Marie Johanna Sophia Hoppe was the 12th of 13 children born to Johann Heinrich Christoph Hoppe and Catharine Maria Kuster in Altencelle, Hannover , Germany . She came to America with 5 of her siblings and her parents on a two mast bark the Minna. After 41 days at sea ,they docked in New York on 6 October 1851. They arrived in Chester, Illinois on 29 October 1851. On 23 May 1867, she married Louis Casper Kicker of St. Louis in the St. John Lutheran Church of Bremen, Illinois.Johanna and Louis lived in South St. Louis in the Biddle street area after their marriage and raised their children here. They would have 9 children together. Her obituary appears in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on 26 December, 1922 and reads as follows:
Asleep in Jesus on Sunday December 24, 1922 at 9:30 a.m. Johanna S. Kicker (nee Hoppe) beloved wife of the late Louis C. Kicker and dear mother of William, Charles, Louis, and Emma Kicker, Mrs. Ellonora Domermuth (nee Kicker), and our der mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and sister in-law in her seventy-eight year.
