Daughter of John Wayland and Catherine Broyles.

She married about 1784, Madison Co., VA, to Joshua Yager, son of "Blind" John Yager and his wife Mary Margaret Wilhoit.

They were both of German descent from Lutheran families that had settled Virginia in the early 1700's as members of the old Germanna colony fleeing the aftermath of the Thirty Years War in Europe.

They were both members of the Hebron Lutheran church.

Hebron Lutheran Church
"Located just north of Madison, VA, the Hebron Lutheran Church is the oldest continuously operating Lutheran Church in the U.S. and is one of a handful of wooden Virginia churches that pre-date the Revolutionary War. It was built in 1740 by the Germanna immigrants of 1717 (the second Germanna Colony). They had moved down to the Madison area from the Germanna settlement (located where Virginia Route 3 crosses the Rapidan River) in about 1726 and took out land patents. They had finally won their freedom from their indenture to Gov. Spotswood, and it was in this area that they began building lives for themselves and their children.
...The church is located on small a rise that affords it a pretty view of the Robinson River and surrounding area. The building had an annex put on around 1800 and it was fitted with a Tannenburg organ from Pennsylvania. The organ, largely unmodified, is still in use today."

The communion lists of the Hebron Lutheran church list Joshua alone in Jun 1783 and show that Maria, his wife, was confirmed and took communion with him on 22 May 1785.

Communion Lists of the Hebron Lutheran Church 1775 to 1812 Madison, Virginia, by John Blankenbaker (Chadd's Ford, PA 2 001):

p 12-13 Communicants Pentecost [8 June] 1783 - Josua Jäger

p 15 Confirmations 22 Sunday after Trinity 1785 [22 May] -

p 15 Communicants First Sunday after Easter [15 April] 1787 - Joshua Jäger wife Maria
p 16 Communicants 27th Sunday after Trinity [23 November] 1788 - Josua Jäger wife Maria
p 17 Communicants Easter [4 April] 1790 - Josua Jäger wife Maria

Joshua and Mary were last recorded in the Hebron church records on Easter Sunday, 4 Apr 1790. They moved some time after that to Mercer Co., KY, where they were listed on the 1800 tax list.

There was no Lutheran or German Reformed church in this area of Kentucky, so apparently the Yagers eventually became Baptists. Their motive for moving west was probably the same as most pioneers - to allow their children to buy land as they came of age and got married.

1793 - they may have been in Kentucky by this year, as in 1850 their daughter Sarah reported on the census that she was born that year in Kentucky.

1795 - In 1850, their daughter Mary reported she was born in Kentucky that year.

Joshua wrote his will on 12 Oct 1804. He directed that all property was to remain in the hands of his wife during her lifetime or as long as she remained a widow. If the children married his wife was to give them as much as she could conveniently spare keeping an account and keeping in mind their proportion as Joshua did not desire one to have more than another. If she married, wife was to take her third and the balance, except land, was to be sold and the money to be for use of the children. Witnesses were Danl Barbee, John Mizner and Geo. D. Rodney.

May 1838 - Johsua Yager's will was proved by B.F. Fisher and Lewis Withers Jr, the subscribing witnesses being all dead, and recorded in Mercer County, Kentucky at May Court 1838. (Mercer County, Kentucky Will Book 11, 1)

The appraisement of Joshua Yager's estate, not totaled, included furniture, tools, guns, 30 gallons of vinegar, 1 large still, livestock, a wagon and horses. Recorded February Court 1839. (Mercer County, Kentucky Will Book 11, 85-86)

6 Nov 1840 - Elijah Yager, surviving administrator of Joshua Yager, made a settlement of accounts in court. Recorded April Court 1841. (Merc er County, Kentucky Will book 11, 309)

Mary herself seems to have died sometime between 1830 and 1840.

On this day he had been hard at work in the field gathering corn. He quit in time to get in his night's wood and do other little chores, and after supper went up in town to get some groceries, and soon returned. He had no more than entered the house and his granddaughter made some remark to him, when he expired suddenly. He was in the enjoyment of good health, and worked up to the last moment.
