Alexander Barnett was a soldier in the Revolution. He served in the southern wing of the Army first with General Gates, later under Nathaniel Green. One of his brother, Joseph, who afterwards came to KY with him, also served in the Revolution. From the time of their enlistment the two brothers did not meet until the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. Alexander came to Kentucky with Daniel Boone in 1778, and was with him in the Paint Creek expedition. He went back to Virginia and then in 1782 or 1783 returned to Kentucky with his family, and also with his brother Joseph and his family, the former settling north of Hartford and the latter in the Sulpher Springs area.
