Mrs. Mary D. Swinbank, daughter of Simon and Judith Belonger, was born in the town of Swanton, Vermont, on January 27, 1851 [should be 1853], and passed away at her home in this city, at 2:45 p.m. Sunday, November 9, 1947, after a prolonged illness.

With the exception of 6 months, Mrs. Swinbank spent her entire life in Shullsburg. As a child, living near what was called "the branch," down east of the Charles Harty residence, she was the pet of the soldier then in training for the Civil War. She waved good bye to them all the morning they marched away to entrain at Apple River, playing, "The Girl I Left Behind Me."

On the 29th day of September, 1870, she was married to William H. Swinbank. To this union were born six children, two of whom died quite young.

Mrs. Swinbank was a member of the Congregational Church of Shullsburg, as long as that church remained in operation. Since then she attended the Centenary Methodist Church of Shullsburg, faithfully when physically able. She was also a member of the Congregational Ladies Guild until that society disbanded.

Mrs. Swinbank led an active life up to August 1946 when serious illness developed. Then in November, 1947 the summons came. She passed away peacefully without neither pain nor struggle. She was conscious to the last. She gently stopped breathing and that was the end of a long, faithful life.

Preceding her in death were her husband, three sons and one daughter.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John Rodham, and one son, Gene, both of Shullsburg, ten grandchildren, and numerous other relatives.

Funeral services were held from her home to the Methodist Church on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Harvey E. Schall officiated and burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Charles Bergener, James Troy, W. F. Kane, J. V. Tregloan, George Baker, and John McQuiety.
