Willard was the son of Hiram and Mary (Carpenter or Barnum) Marsh. He married Althea (Norton) on 29-Sep-1866 in Columbus, Columbia County, Wisconsin.

The name on Willard's tombstone is misspelled and his birthdate is probably 1845 rather than 1841. These errors are on the 3-Jan-1923 burial permit signed by his son-in-law, Carl F. Cleveland. The permit also shows his birthplace as Warsaw County, but I believe this is incorrect since he used Waukesha on his 1866 marriage license. I cannot find a birth certificate, but the 1845 birth estimate is based on the 1850, 1860, 1910, and 1920 Federal Census records. Also, I have found a July 1843 Milwaukee marriage announcement for a couple that may be his parents, Hiram Marsh and Mary Barnum.

Willard was a Private in Company E, 3rd Wisconsin Calvary during the Civil War and became a member of the Rockford, Illinois GAR after the war. Willard enlisted on 11-Jan-1862 at Fall River, Wisconsin. Fall River was near the family farm. Regimental records indicate his age at enlistment to be 18, which was the minimum Union Army enlistment age. However, if his birthdate was April 1845 rather than 1841, he would have been 16 years 9 months when he enlisted. He served the entire war and was discharged on 27-Aug-1865.
