Robert was the son of Frank F. Boynton of New Portland, Somerset County, Maine and Jennie A. Akin Boynton of Genesee County, New York. Jennie and Frank were married on 24 July 1894 in Methodist Episcopal Church, Mauston, Juneau County, Wisconsin. Jennie and Frank had three children. They were: Edwin Hadley Boynton was born on 15 July 1896; Felicia Henrietta Boynton was born on 11 June 1899 in Elroy, Juneau County, Wisconsin; and Robert Henry Boynton was born on 05 December 1901 in Elroy, Juneau County, Wisconsin.

Robert married Flora Launa Carlisle on 11 December 1922 in Santa Ana, California. Flora and Robert had three children. They were: Robert Lee Boynton was born on 28 October 1923; June Eileen Boynton was born on 28 September 1926; and Florence L. Boynton was born on 15 August 1928.
