Aleksander Baliś was born in Chrzanów in the then Austrian Galicia (now Poland) to Jan Baliś and Magdalena née Palka. In 1863, at the age of 17, he took part in the January Insurrection, a Polish revolt against the occupying Russian forces in the neighbouring Kingdom of Poland. As an Austrian subject, who illegally crossed the Austro-Russian border to take part in the combat against Russia (Austrian ally at the time), he was apprehended by the Austrian authorities upon his return to the Austrian Galicia and sentenced in 1864 to several months of imprisonment in the Wiśnicz Fortress Prison. In 1866 he married Franciszka Lubasz (d.1909) with whom he is buried. The couple had numerous issue, the majority of whom died in infancy. He worked as bricklayer.
