Ruth E. Kitner, 90, went to be with Jesus on April 24, 2012, at Messiah Village in Mechanicsburg, PA, her residence for nearly 25 years. She was born in Owosso, MI, to Seth and Mary Main Adams, the 7th of 10 children. Her mother passed away when Ruth was only 8 years old and the 6 youngest siblings were raised at Mt. Carmel Orphanage in Illinois. At age 18 she found work as a maid/nanny for a family. She maintained close contact with the orphanage, and when some staff moved to PA, she came to Harrisburg where she became a member of the Brethren in Christ Church and also met and married her husband, William Kitner. In 1947, the couple moved to Chambersburg and made it their home for several decades. Shortly after Ruth was widowed, she moved to Messiah Village.

Early in life Ruth trusted Christ as her Savior. She was a hard worker, providing cleaning and other services for companies, dr. offices and private residences. She traveled in early days on her roller skates, then a bicycle, and finally a station wagon. She loved working with children and taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and more. Countless hours of volunteer labor were spent in gardens, flower beds, dining rooms and taking people to dr. appointments. She even hauled a friend's harp to her performances for her!

Ruth is survived by one sister, Mary Forbes, who lives in California, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. We will miss our dear "Butterfly and Hat Lady", her infectious laughter and faithful prayers. But we look forward to a joyful reunion in Heaven.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Messiah Village Chapel on Sunday, May 6, at 3 pm. Visitation will be from 2:30 to 3pm. Memorial contributions can be made to Messiah Lifeways at Messiah Village Endowment Fund, 100 Mt. Allen Dr., Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
