John Elonzo Fletcher, Jr., 97, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 26, 2012. Born in Gaston County, he was the son of the late John Elonzo Fletcher, Sr. and Ida Shepherd Fletcher. Mr. Fletcher was a retired shop supervisor with Firestone Mill where he was employed for 42 years. John was a member of Parkwood Baptist Church, a Mason and Shriner with Oasis Temple.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Fletcher was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine Austin Fletcher; second wife, Rosie Caldwell Fletcher; brothers, E.M., Paul, Arthur, Earl and Norman; sister, Ophelia Givins; step-daughter, Peggy Rose Wellman.
Mr. Fletcher is survived by a daughter-in-law, Betty Austin; step-daughter, Jane Johnson and husband, Joe; sister, Margaret Oakley; numerous step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral service beginning at 10:00 AM Monday, October 29 in the Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia. Dr. M.O. Owens, Rev. David Belle Isle and Pastor Vernon Carver will officiate. Burial will follow at Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM Sunday, October 28 at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Village Benevolence Fund, 1351 Robinwood Road, Gastonia, NC 28054 or Gaston Hospice, P.O. Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28054.
