Phillip, a native of El Guache and resident of Albuquerque, passed away after battling kidney failure and other complications connected to his illness. He was predeceased by parents José Patricio "Pat" Martinez and Dilia M. Martinez, who were both longtime educators in the Española area.

Phillip was survived by his daughter Helene Martinez, sister Cecilia Martinez-Sánchez (husband Michael), niece Karina Sánchez, and two nephews Eric Sánchez and Christopher Sánchez.

Phillip graduated from St. Michael's High School in Santa Fe and later attended the University of New Mexico. He was also a United States Marine Corps veteran.

Recitation of the Rosary was on April 28th in the chapel at Rivera Family Funeral Home in Española. The Mass of Christian Burial was on May 1st at The Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Albuquerque, located at 5311 Phoenix Avenue NE, Albuquerque. Interment was in the Santa Fe National Cemetery with military honors.
