Mrs. Amy West Allen, daughter of Isaphena Burdick and Wm. B. West was born at Utica, Dane county, Wisc., November 29, 1859, and died at Riverside, Calif., October 18, 1911.
Mrs. Allen's childhood was spent in the home at Utica, but being ambitious for an education she later attended school at Albion academy and at Milton college, from which latter institution she was graduated. She was for a number of years a successful teacher. In 1891 she was married to Wm. H. Allen of Alfred, New York, which place became her home until after the death of her father the family moved to Milton Junction to be near her widowed mother, who survived the father but two years.
Four years ago, on the advice of a physician counseling them to seek a warmer climate, the family removed to Riverside, Calif.
Mrs. Allen was a devoted wife and mother and leaves three children, Isaphena, Franklin and Paul, to mourn her loss. Mrs. Allen joined the S. D. B. church of Utica in early girlhood and has ever remained loyal to that faith, being an earnest worker in the various churches of that denomination with which she has been connected, teaching in the Sabbath school when health and home duties would permit. Soon after going to Riverside she organized the Junior Endeavor Society of which she remained superintendent until about a year ago, when owing to failing health she was obliged to give the work into other hands.
Mrs. Allen was never in robust health, having suffered from childhood with an affection of the heart which finally resulted in death after an illness lasting nearly a year, during which she was tenderly cared for by her devoted husband and family, assisted during the last six weeks by her sister, Mrs. W. D. Burdick, of Farina, Ill.
The funeral was held at the Riverside S. D. B. church, Friday, October 20th, and the body placed in a receiving vault from which it will be later removed and brought to Milton Junction for burial.
Mrs. W. D. Burdick of Farina, and Mr. Allen B. West of Milton Junction, sister and brother of Mrs. Allen, are the only surviving members of their father's family.
Mrs. W. D. Burdick of Farina, Ill., who has been in Riverside, Calif., caring for her sister, returns this week to her home in Farina, bringing Mrs. Allen's children with her. The family expect to make Farina their home for a few years, and Mr. Allen will join them there as soon as he is able to close out his interests in California.
