Lt. Ward was a member of Battery M, 2nd US Artillery. He was commissioned November 7, 1866 from the state of New York. He was stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco from Feb. 5, 1867 until May 21, 1867 when he was transferred to Drum Barracks Wilmington CA due to poor health. He died of consumption on July 3, 1867; at the Drum Barracks and was buried on July 4, 1867.
His prior military service was as Clerk of the Cadet Commissary at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point from 1860 to 1861. From August 1861 to September 1862 he served as Chief Clerk in the Quartermaster Corps with General Bank's command in the Department of the Shenandoah. He was commissioned as 1st Lt. and Regimental Quartermaster of the 9th Michigan Cavalry on Dec. 5, 1862; and was honorably discharged on Nov. 30, 1864.
