Shirley J. Gerdes, 72, of Freeport died Friday May 7, 2010, at her home.
Shirley was born Feb. 2, 1938, in Indianapolis, Ind., the daughter of Milburn and Ruby (Montgomery) Surber. She married DuWayne "Dewey" Gerdes on Nov. 23, 1979, in Utah.
Shirley worked at Micro Switch 25 years before retiring in June 1997.
Growing up Shirley attended schools in Lena.
Shirley is survived by her husband DuWayne "Dewey" Gerdes of Freeport; one son, Devan (Juanda) Howe of Merrill, Wis.; one daughter, Deborah (Rodney) Schiffman of Orem, Utah; one brother, John Reeder of Olympia, Wash.; one sister, Chriseta Mackenzie of Rockford; one stepdaughter, Kathleen (Russ) Rufer of Monroe, Wis.; two stepsons, Kevin (Theresa) Gerdes of Hustler, Wis., and Kenneth Gerdes of Madison, Wis.; three grandchildren, Amanda M. and Aaron E. Green and Ian D. Schiffman; seven stepgrandchildren, Nichole (Jeremy) Dersham, Nicholas Young, Michelle Miller, Nicholas Miller, Briana Rufer, Leslie Gerdes and Kevin Gerdes Jr.; seven great-grandchildren, Dawson, Mercedes, Preston, Zachary, Zoey, Damien and Devin. Shirley also is survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather and one brother, Jim Surber.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 10, at Crossroads Community Church in Freeport with the Rev. Ron Langford officiating.
Entombment will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 9, at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
A memorial fund has been established in her memory.
