"Country Correspondence - Chapman"

"The Grim Reaper Death has once more invaded this community and claimed for his own one of the oldest and most estimable residents of this part of the county, Mrs. Elmyra A. Martin. Mrs. Martin had been seriously ill for several weeks. She was given every possible medical care. Trained nurses were in constant attendance and every effort was made to relieve her suffering. All was unavailing, however, and on Tuesday morning she passed to her reward. Asthma and heart trouble were the causes of her death.

Elmyra A. Cunningham was born March 8, 1843, at Medford, Ontario, Canada. In 1871 she moved to the United States and on February 26, 1874, at Shelby, Neb., she was united in marriage to John I. Martin. Mr. and Mrs. Martin were pioneer settlers here, homesteading on the old Martin farm on the Platte river. Four children were born, all of whom survive. They are James G. Blaine, Roscoe Conkling, George Edmund and Mrs. Mabel Beenblossom. The husband and father departed this life in 1893. The deceased had been a member of the United Brethren and M.E. churches, joining the former at the age of nine years. Hers had been a quiet, consistent Christian life, and devoted to her family. The funeral was held Wednesday August 23rd at 3 o'clock p.m. from the M.E. church here. District Superintendent G. H. Main of Central City conducted the services. The remains were laid away in their final resting place in the Chapman cemetery..."
