Leo was born in St. Paul, AB - where his family lived for a short time. The family moved to Maillardville, BC where they lived for many years until his parents bought a house on 10th Ave in Burbaby. Life was tough growing up - Leo, his brother Omer, and sister Sylvia stayed at an in Orphanage in New Westminster, BC that was operated by the Catholic Church. Leo & his brother only went home to their parents one weekend a month. Their parents worked in Vancouver and public transportation was limited (neither one of his parents ever drove a vehicle).

Leo had many jobs one being with Finney where the family relocated to Williams Lake, BC for a number of years, however, returned to the lower mainland.

Leo lost 4 of his 5 children tragically while they were very young.
