DEATH OF AN AGED CITIZEN
Ira Almy, who died at his home in Farmer Village, Nov. 12, 1884, was the son of Samuel Almy, one of the first settlers of Seneca county. Ira Almy was born in Cayuga Co., now Seneca, in 1802, his father, who was a Quaker, keeping a public house near King's Ferry. In 1831, Ira Almy left the farm and engaged in boat-building and grain buying at Kidder's Ferry. In 1840, he opened a general store at Farmer Village which has been his home since that time.
He was one of the oldest (if not the oldest) members of the Masonic fraternity in the state having united with the lodge at Farmer Village in 1825, and retaining his connection with it up to the time of his death.
He has been magistrate, commissioner of highways, and supervisor of the town of Covert, and superintendent of the poor for the county of Seneca, and was always an honest, able and efficient officer.
In 1815 he helped lay out the then unbuilt town of Farmer Village, about one half of the present village being built on what was his father's farm. He was deeply interested in all that pertained to the welfare of his village, and was one of the founders and for many years an officer of the Lake View cemetery association.
He was a regular attendant and a liberal supporter of the Baptist church, and for several terms filled the office of trustee.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church on the 14th inst., the pastor, Rev. Lewis Halsey, preaching a memorial sermon. A large congregation was present including delegations from the lodges at Trumansburg, Ovid, Lodi and Romulus, the closing services being under the direction of the Masonic fraternity, Mr. T. W. Rappleye W.M., Mr. Isaac H. Stout, Marshal.
Among the friends and relatives present were Mrs. L.H. Culver, of Ithaca; and Dr. C.E. Swift and wife and Mr. H.E. Knapp and family of Auburn.
