Walter Blaine "Red" McDonald was the 2nd son and the 3rd child of Calvin Sawyer McDonald and Lillie Stella Green McDonald. He first married Othello Gwendolen Shoup McDonald on Jun 22, 1930 in Stephenville, TX, Erath Co. They had 2 sons and 1 daughter. After Othello's death, he married Velma Weldon McDonald on Aug 8, 1975. They had no children.

Walter B. "Red" McDonald, 87, former chief of police, died Monday at a local hospital. Services are pending with North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange.

Walter "Red" B. McDonald, 87, of Abilene, died Monday at a local hospital. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at North's Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, 242 Orange, with the Reverend Chris Diebell officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of North's Funeral Homes.
Mr. McDonald was born in Coleman County, Texas, September 17, 1910. He came to Abilene, where he was reared, in 1915. He operated a service station on Pine Street for several years before joining the Police Department in May 1941.
Through working the tough walking beats of the South Front area throughout the '40's, he gained the reputation as being a "tough cop," advancing to Captain of Detectives. He served as Chief of Police from 1956 to 1957. McDonald retired from the police force in 1960. He worked for Patton Equipment for more than 20 years before retiring because of his health.
He was a member of Oddfellow Lodge. He married Othello Gwendolyn Shoup June 1930 in Stephenville, Texas. She died in February 1974. He then married Velma Weldon in September 1975. She preceded him in death.
Mr. McDonald is survived by one daughter, Anity Harrison, of Abilene; one daughter-in-law, Tommie Jo McDonald, of Abilene; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Norman McDonald, an Abilene Fireman killed in the line of dury in 1956 and Delber McDonald, who died in 1996.
Pallbearers will be J. D. Slef, Roger Braun, Mike Patton, Chuck Patton, C. Q. Billings, Allen Hatchett, and Ken Hamil.
