Caroline Elizabeth Matilda Thornton was born December 9, 1845 in Mason County, Illinois, in which state she grew to maturity and on September 8, 1863, she was united in marriage to L.A. Kern. To this union were born ten children, six sons and four daughters; three of this number have preceded the mother in death. The husband preceded her in death in the year 1900.
Those who survive to mourn her going are the four sons, Ruben A. Kern and Charles L. Kern of Madison, Benjamin P. Kern of Iola and Carl I. Kern of Dodge City, Kansas. Three daughters, Mary Johnson and Nella Downing of Sacramento, Calif, and Goldie Wiedmer of Madison. Two brothers, R.W. Thornton of Madison and Dan Thornton of Eureka. One sister Martha Casto of Eureka, 31 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church Monday afternoon, August 7th at 2:30 o'clock. Interment was made in the Blakely Cemetery.
