Zilpha Dunbar married Samuel Reed Wheat (1884-1955, burial Sowers cemetery, Irving, Texas, per death certificate; no findagrave entry as of November 2018) on January 4, 1906, in Adair County, Ky. Samuel was the only child of Cyrus Wheat (64596813) and his second wife, Ellen B. Page Coffey Wheat (68603288), the widow of Joseph S. Coffey.

About ten months later, Sam and Zilpha departed Montpelier, Adair County, for Texas, and the following April, their son and only child, Thomas Cyrus Wheat (108763843), was born there. The marriage was short lived, and by the time the 1910 census was taken, Zilpha and young Thomas lived with her parents in Adair County. The couple apparently parted ways on acrimonious terms. On Thomas C.'s first marriage license (1934), he incorrectly indicated his father was deceased, and Samuel's death certificate (1955) incorrectly stated he had never married.

On October 6, 1934, Thomas C. Wheat, then a resident of Detroit. Michigan. and Wanda E. Redman, 22, a native of Mount Vernon, Indiana, and a resident of Detroit, were married in Elkhart, Indiana. Apparently, either Wanda had died or she and Thomas gone their separate ways by the time the 1940 census was taken, as he was one of two boarders in a private residence in Detroit. Wanda seems not to appear in the 1940 census under either the Wheat or Redman surname. At some point, Thomas married Margaret K. -------- (108763983); her name appears on their common grave marker.
