Daughter of Swiss immigrant Johann Rudolf Itten (also known as John Eaton) and Italian immigrant Madeline Justet. Emma is their first child of four. Emma's little brother, John, died when he was six months old. Her two sisters, Mary Caroline and Jane Margaret lived to adulthood.
In November of 1875 Emma's father was involved in a shooting with cattle rustlers and killed. He is buried along the Panguitch River. The family was living in Panguitch, Utah at the time. Madeline was left with three little girls ages 6, 2, and 2 months. She took her little family to Escalante, Utah where her brother, Daniel, could be of some help to her. Madeline married again in 1880 to Heber Knight. He only lived three years after the marriage. It was in this setting that Emma grew to adulthood.
At age 15, on June 19, 1884 Emma married Heber Steele Marshall in Salt Lake City, Utah. She gave birth to her first child when she was seventeen. Over the next 22 years she and Heber became the parents of nine children. They were born in Escalante, Arizona, Panguitch, and Tropic, Utah. Emma's children are Joseph Albert, John Henry, Heber Erastus, Rolland, Alba, Lyman, Lafayette, Fontella, and Renaldo. Heber died in 1912 when baby, Renaldo, was only four years old.
Emma married Ira Bartlett Church, December 25, 1915 in Tropic, Utah. She was 47 years old and had lived a lifetime. She spent her remaining years with Ira and died in Provo, Utah at age 83.
