He married Etta Ora Lee Yates in 1905 in Gibson County, Tennessee. To this union were born four children, Roy McCartney, Ernest McCartney, Dennis McCartney, and Fred McCartney. The older two children, Roy and Earnest, both died in childhood. The were interred at Poplar Springs Cemetery near the grave of John's mother, Susan. Both Dennis and Fred survived to adulthood, married, and had children.
John was a member of Belew's Chapel General Baptist Church located south of Skullbone in Gibson County. Upon his death in 1963, his wishes were fulfilled when he was laid to rest in Belew's Chapel Cemetery.
