MADISON — Lena M. Carter, 80, died June 11, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Carter Jr. She was the daughter of the late Robert L. and Dora Barton White Chaffin. Survivors include her son, Vurden (Catherine) Martin of Burbank, Calif.; sisters, Willie Chaffin Farley of Old Hickory, and Virginia Ruth Chaffin Jones of McKenzie, Tenn.; and grandsons, Vurden Thor Martin of Burbank, Calif., Erik Darnell Martin of Ocean Beach, Calif., and Ian Paul Martin of Burbank, Calif. Mrs. Carter was a member of First Baptist Church Old Hickory. For over 20 years she was the owner/operator of Lena's Beauty Salon in Old Hickory. During World War II, she worked at the Vultee Aircraft Plant in Nashville. For the last six months, Mrs. Carter lived in California visiting her family. Mrs. Carter was from a large family and has numerous nephews and nieces living in and around the Old Hickory area. Remains rest at Hadley Chapel of Phillips-Robinson Co., 1700 Hadley Ave., where a funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, with Bro. Judd Hayes officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
