Mary Mauch was first married to William Bailey before 1827. He died about 1840 and she married 2nd to Samuel Powell about then. It is believed that Samuel adopted her children and they took the Powell name instead of Bailey. Mary was the mother of at least 8 children: Richard, Mrs. Sarah Ann Rutherford, Ephaim C., Henry H., James, Mrs. Mary Anna Davis, Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Wicker and William E. Powell.
