In the 1900 U.S. Census, lumber mill sawyer James A. Sawyer, 44, born July 1855 in Canada, parents born Canada, was living on Baring Street, Calais, Maine with Hattie A., 40, born Feb. 1860 in Maine, parents born Maine; day laborer Nellie M., Charles E., 25, born March 1876; Nellie M., 21, born July 1878; Effie E., 20, born April 1880; cotton mill carder Etta H., 14,born December 1885; William, 12, born October 1888; Emma H., 9, born August 1890; Ethel, 7, born April, 1893; and Lynnwood, 4, born March 1896, all born in Maine.
The Cooksons had been married for 26 years. Eight of their 14 children were still living.
