"Buck" Ellis was born in Angola, Indiana to Benjamin Franklin Ellis and Forest Rose Reeder Ellis on September 28, 1899. His mother died (possibly from exposure) after a fire that destroyed their home on October 23, 1902. His twin sister Edwina died of polio in November of of 1910. In 1910, his father married Annie Mabel Ellis, and in 1911 the family moved to Los Angeles, where his half-sister Virginia was born. In 1918, Buck enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was on a mine sweeper for the last months of WWI. He returned to Los Angeles after WWI, and in 1921 he married Marion Woodward. They had two children; Elizabeth Louise (Tait, 1924-1974), and Jacqueline Rose (Hetrick, Warren, Shoopman, 1926-1992).
In 1935 Buck married Mabel (Brudwick) McLelland, they were divorced in 1946. In 1950 Buck married Lila (Hindman) Biddle, and they were married until her death in 1975.
In 1926 he joined the Los Angeles City Fire Department, answering a recruitment ad for "Experienced Truck Drivers." He spent the last 10 years of his career on The City of L.A. #2, a fireboat in Los Angeles/San Pedro Harbor. He was forced to retire from the L.A.F.D. in 1958 after a heart attack.
Buck was an avid fisherman and hunter; he holds the record for the largest fish (a 19+lb. German Brown Trout) caught in Convict Lake, CA.
Buck's ashes were scattered in that lake after his death on June 24, 1976 of heart failure.
Towards the end of his life, every child on our block called him "Grandpa." He loved children, and was one of those people who holds a neighborhood and a community together by setting an example of giving and caring for others.
I am so proud & grateful that he was my Grandpa.
