Edward Bristow

b. 2 Mar 1807 Shipley, Sussex, England
m. 31 Jul 1827 Shipley, Sussex, England [Hannah Streeter]
d. 25 Sep 1884 Elmira, Woowlich Twp, Waterloo Co, Ontario, Canada

Edward came to Canada with Hannah and most likely 2 children on a Petworth Immigration Scheme ship in 1832.

They lived in Conestogo, Waterloo Co, Ontario, Canada for several years while Edward was working for David Musselman at his mill to help pay off his debt to Musselman for his land in Woolwich Twp. In his spare time he hiked back and forth to his land while building his cabin. The family moved to cabin about 1836/39. Since county registry offices wer not set up to handle land registrations for private sales until the 1840s his deed was not registered until 1847. His land, part lot 88 [53 acres more or less] was just south of the 50 acre farm [also part lot 88] of his brother-in-law George Streeter.

Edward established a store near the intersection of the Arthur Road and the road from Guelph to lake Huron where his wife sold grocery & fancy goods, and he established his first post office which was know as Bristow's Corner's until it was formally taken into the Canadian postal system and was called West Woolwich, 'Woolwich' being the first Canadian post office established in the Township at Winterbourne.

In 1854 the community at Bristow's Corners was named as the hamlet of Elmira, after Elmira, New York which town had much impressed a Woolwich Township merchant, Mr. Samuel Weaver, on a business trip to that town.

Edward Bristow was an entrepreneur who, while resident in Elmira, had a store, a shoe shop, potashery, a small inn, a blacksmith shop, and a mail stage which ran from Elmira to Glen Allan in Wellington County. He hired local men or used his growing family to operate most of these enterprises. He was also instrumental in supporting the establishment of the first school in Elmira, and unsuccessfully lobbying for a rail line to pass through Elmira in 1853.

In the early 1850s he bought 400 acres in Wallace Twp, Perth Co, just north of Listowel as that area of the Queen's bush was opening up at that time, and land was cheap. He moved around 1855 to the new hamlet of Shipley [named after his birthplace in England] still maintaining his operations in Elmira. He developed a small business operation of a saw mill and a store on his land. In 1860 he sold his land in Woolwich Twp., and gave up his postmastership at Elmira. He soon procured a license to operate the Post Office at Shipley.

The Bristow children began marrying in 1847 when Fanny married Henry Peterson at Woolwich. Ann married Joseph Rogers in 1856 at Wallace. Edward Jr. married Nancy Allison in 1858 at Wallace. Mary Jane married Nancy's brother, Abel, in 1859 at Wallace. Walter married Margaret Harris in 1864 at Wallace. John married Eliza Brackett in 1866 at La Crosse, Wisconsin. William married Margaret's sister, Amanda, in 1867 at Wallace, and Allen married Hannah Andrew in 1868 at Wallace. It is not known at this time if Eliza married. Hannah is presumed to have died young, either in England or Canada.

Edward's brothers John and Thomas joined them at Conestogo in 1835. John with his small family, and Thomas the eternal bachelor. Both John and Thomas bought property in Wallace Township along with Edward. Only Thomas joined him in Wallace as John remained on his farm in Woolwich when his wife, Sarah, died in 1858.

Above is a brief overview of the Bristow Family in Canada. Edward & Hannah's descendants are well spread across Canada and the USA.
