Second son of Mary Ann Garrett and Josiah Milton Smith, G.L. Smith was born October 25, 1889 in Waters, Montgomery County, Arkansas. His father and mother were both children of pioneer families who came from Tippah County, Mississippi by ox-drawn wagons to Oden, Montgomery County in the 1850’s where they established farms and raised large families. G.L. lost his father when he was less than two years old, but he grew up among a large network of relatives around Oden, Waters, and Mount Ida, Arkansas. Sometime between 1910 and 1916 he went to Caddo County, Oklahoma (Sickles Township) to teach school. There he met and married Florence Harrell, daughter of Nick Harvey Harrell who had homesteaded there in 1901. Guilford and Florence Smith were married for 52 years and raised ten children. In the early 1920s they moved to southwest La Plata County, Colorado where they farmed for more than 20 years. During the 1940’s they lived in Durango, Colorado and G.L. worked at Graden’s Department Store there. Upon retirement they lived briefly in Phoenix, AZ in the late 1950s, Corona, California, and Pacific Beach, California. Guilford Lawton Smith died in Pacific Beach July 18, 1968 and is buried in Corona, California.
