10/1/2012 - I called & talked to 83 yr old Zelma Newman, former record's keeper for the Old New Garden Cemetery in Brookfield, MO. Her mother was from the area and was in her 40's when Zelma was born. Zelma wouldn't have been born yet in 1931, but Zelma remembers her mom talking about the Nance family. The story was that Mrs. Nance was shot and killed under suspicious circumstances. The neighbors were always skeptical that it wasn't an accident. Zelma said her mom had always liked Mrs. Nance.

Zelma went on to tell me that there are no records for who is buried in the cemetery. She said she went through the gravestones in the 1970's and made a list of burials from the marked gravesites. Opal didn't have a gravestone, so there's no record as to the location of her grave. Zelma did say that she has an idea of where Opal might be buried by what her mother told her. Zelma said if we came to Brookfield, MO, she could show us the spot.
