'In the winter of 1919, influenza struck, whole families were taken ill with the dread disease. Three children living in the same neighborhood died, one was Melvin, the oldest son of Garfield and Millie. He died on Jan 27th and was buried the same day. Millie was in Minneapolis taking treatments when her son became ill. Garfield was taken sick also, thus making the experience doubly painful. Millie returned home just in time to see her son pass away. Due to the epidemic, they were not allowed to have funerals. A couple of men from the neighborhood went to the St. Olaf cemetery and dug a grave and buried him. Om May 30th a memorial service was held at St Olaf church for Melvin and his body was later moved to the family plot.'
